A warm, sunny evening greeted the 20 or so runners on Friday, April 30th at CBA’s newly installed turf track at Alibrandi Stadium for the annual Carsky Run. The event, which includes a one-lap, ‘fun run,’ is held in honor of Bob Carsky ’73 who was tragically killed in 2004 during a civil war in Africa’s Ivory Coast. Bob was a prominent soil scientist and crop researcher who had spent over two decades working on economic development and agricultural reform in Africa.

As Bob was a cross country and track star at CBA, his classmates and peers organized the run as a fitting tribute to their friend, shortly after his memorial service in 2004. His parents, Dr. and Mrs. Carsky, established the Robert J. Carsky ’73 scholarship in Bob’s honor. This very special event helps raise funds to support the scholarship and for the newly established Robert J. Carsky Scholarship Fund which helps deserving CBA students who are African refugees or of African descent. Close to $9000 has been raised for the scholarship and fund thus far this year.

Participants included alums, students, and Bob’s family members: Dr. and Mrs. Carsky; his sister Lanie, and her husband, Matt; Their sons, Josh and Matt; Matt’s wife, Jen (who was nine months pregnant); and their 2 year old daughter, Avery. After the run, the group gathered at the center track as Dr. and Mrs. Carsky presented awards to the winners in Bob’s event – Men’s 1500m and Women’s 1600m. Tom Voorheis ’10 is the first CBA runner to receive the award since the event’s inception.

Those assembled were treated to delicious pizza and beverages generously donated by Bob Walker ’75 and Franco’s Pizza. Our deepest appreciation to Stephen Bowman ’77 and Dick Driscoll ’74 for their continued support of this event.
