2010 Alumni Association Purple & Gold Award

On March 20, 2010, over 125 alumni, family, previous award winners, and members of the CBA community gathered in La Salle Hall at Christian Brothers Academy to honor the 2010 Alumni Association Purple & Gold Award recipients:  Mr. Gary Barnaba and Br. Gabriel Fiumano, FSC ’47.

Br. Gabriel Fiumano, FSC ’47 displays his characteristically humble demeanor during a brief, but entertaining acceptance speech for the Purple & Gold Award.

Gary Barnaba delivers a gracious acceptance speech during the 2010 Purple & Gold Award ceremony.
These deserving gentlemen were chosen to receive this prestigious award for their long, dedicated years of service to CBA and its students and for their commitment to the school’s ideals and principles.

Gary Barnaba began his forty year tenure at CBA as a wrestling coach in 1969, and has been bringing his talents and energy to the classroom since 1970. Gary served as Athletic Director from 1970-1986 and he has coached varsity wrestling, varsity football, varsity tennis, and freshman basketball. He established football and wrestling summer camps for high school students, and basketball skills camps for elementary students - and Coach B’s camp is still a popular “Summer Sizzle” program. Gary has served as a mentor and benefactor for countless CBA students, assisting them with college applications and serving as a liaison with collegiate coaches. He was honored as the LaSallian Educator for the 1991-1992 academic year.

In his acceptance speech, Gary expressed his appreciation and admiration to his wife, Sheila; his sisters; several of his former students; his fellow teachers; and the entire CBA community. He was visibly touched and grateful to have received this honor, noting that it was especially meaningful to be able to ‘share the stage’ with Br. Gabe. Fiumano echoed the sentiment after receiving his award, thanking his family, friends and colleagues for their support and encouragement – stressing, in his characteristically humble style, that the assembled crowd was especially large, thanks to the popularity of his fellow recipient.

Br. Gabriel Fiumano, FSC ’47 has worked at Christian Brothers’ schools and facilities in DC, Troy, New York City, and Albany, serving as teacher, life coach, and guardian to countless young men. In 1983, Brother Gabe returned to CBA as Campus Minister and member of the faculty. His business course, “Sports and Entertainment Marketing,” has been a popular elective for juniors and seniors and has served as Brother Gabe’s venue for communicating the virtues of a true gentleman. He has been a devoted and tireless supporter of the school, serving several terms on the Board of Trustees and as treasurer of the Booster Club for many years. His ‘pizza frites’ are a favorite among generations of CBA sports fans. Brother Gabe is a staunch patron of the arts and enthusiastically attends almost all student drama productions, art exhibits, and musical and dance performances.

Several guests then joined the festivities in the main gym for the 21st annual Lasallian Dinner and Auction, elegantly transformed to represent the evening’s theme of Champagne and Chandeliers.
