Peer Minister Student Coordinators Deshawn Salter and Bella Corieri
The CBA student body, staff and faculty joined Fr. Mike Taylor, Associate Pastor of Assumption Parish to celebrate the Mass of the Holy Spirit in a sweltering gymnasium on Wednesday.
The Mass was the first of the new school year for the student body, who were allowed to wear shorts to school, instead of the mandatory dress code, due to the unseasonably warm weather.
The Peer Ministers, led by student coordinators and seniors Deshawn Salter and Bella Corieri, wore royal blue t-shirts, with “Jesus” on the front of them. The “s” in Jesus, was bold, similar to what fictional character and superhero Superman wears on his cape. The theme for Peer Ministry this year is “Love In Action.” Two banners with the Spiritual and Corporal Works of Mercy-feed the hungry, quench those who thirst, clothe the naked, shelter the homeless, visit the sick and imprisoned and honor the dead, hung from gym.
“I can’t think of any better theme- the Corporal Works of Mercy, than the one you have chosen,” Fr. Taylor said. “All of this is so appropriate, especially on this day, the anniversary of 9/11.”
Seniors Morgan Liptak and Lauren DeLorenzo were responsible for the readings. The general intercessions were presented by seniors Sarah Lester and Tim Pierret and juniors Serena Schmitt and Gabby Damico.
Each of the gift bearers represented a Corporal Work of Mercy. Seventh grader Hillary Dang carried a loaf of bread and a jar of peanut butter, which represented feed the hungry. Eighth grader Jack Lester carried a pitcher of water for thirst. Freshman Dan Damico represented clothe the naked with a jacket. Sophomore Clare Pierret presented a pillow for shelter the homeless. Junior Emmett Dunn carried a teddy bear for visit the sick and imprisoned and senior Mary Hartnett presented a vase of flowers to represent honoring the dead.
Brother Joseph Jozwiak, FSC, led the ceremony of commitment, commissioning the seniors to lead by example, in particular with the new seventh graders at CBA. Brother Joseph also announced that senior Lauren DeLorenzo was a National Merit Scholarship semifinalist; and that John “Buddy” Wleklinski, longtime CBA Athletics Director, was named Lasallian Educator of the Year.
