
Swimmers Makes Waves at Regional/National Competition
CBA swimmers recently competed at a number of high-level regional and national swim meets. Each swimmer was required to meet high quality time standards in order to participate.
Ruthie Speidel, 11, Zoe McCauley 11, Maggie Fletcher 13, Lexy McCauley 13, and Josh Lacey 14 all competed against swimmers from all over Central and Western New York at the Niagara District Age Group Championships, held March 17-20, 2011, in Webster, NY, Highlights of the meet included Speidel winning the 1000 Free, Lacey taking four 2nd place finishes and two 3rd place finishes, and Fletcher swimming in top 5 or better in all her races, including two 2nd place finishes. All five also competed on several relays. Speidel, Fletcher, and Lacey all qualified for the Eastern Zone Age Group Championships, but only Lacey accepted the invitation. From March 31 through April 2, 2011, Lacey traveled to Webster, NY, to compete in four events at this meet against competitors from around the Northeast.
While the others swam at districts, Kathryn Coughlin 13 and Summer Schmitt 13 qualified for and swam in the NCSA Jr. Nationals in Orlando, FL, March 15-19, 2011. Both Coughlin (Breaststroke) and Schmitt (Fly and Back) posted best times and made finals — each one competing against 18 & unders from across the country. Schmitts 100 Fly qualified her for the USA Jr. and Sr. National Short Course Championships.
Coughlin and Schmitt then joined Fletcher and Lacey in Buffalo, NY, March 25-27, 2011, at the Speedo Eastern Championships to compete against the best swimmers from the Northeast. Coughlin finished 5th and 8th in the 100 and 200 Breaststroke, respectively. Schmitt made finals in all five of her events and also finished 5th and 8th in the 100 Fly and 200 Fly, respectively. Schmitts 200 Fly was another USA Jr. National Qualifying time.
