The people who shape our lives most profoundly are often not the ones standing at podiums, holding titles, or receiving applause. They are the ones whose sacrifices remain largely hidden, the invisible foundation beneath the character, faith, and goodness we eventually see in the children they raised.
May is dedicated in a special way to Mary, the Mother of God. In Scripture, Mary speaks very few words. Yet, her quiet “yes” changed the course of history. Her greatness was not found in power or prestige, but in her faithful willingness to love, trust, and accompany others through both the joys of Bethlehem and beneath the shadow of the Cross.
As Lasallians, it is fitting that we remember the women who helped build the very foundation of our mission. While the story of Saint John Baptist de La Salle often focuses on the Brothers, the mission was sustained by women whose quiet faithfulness helped carry the Lasallian mission from its very beginning:
Perrette Lespagnol, whose wisdom guided a young De La Salle through the grief of losing his parents.
Sister Louise Hours, who called him to remain faithful to his vocation when the mission felt too heavy to bear.
The countless mothers of the first students who, amidst poverty, entrusted their children to a future they could not yet see.
Much of their holiness unfolded unseen. Yet, without their faithfulness, the Lasallian mission would not exist today.
As President of Christian Brothers Academy, I witness this same quiet holiness every single day.
I see the mother who rearranges schedules, sacrifices time, and gives endlessly of herself so that her child may flourish.
I see the grandmother whose faithful presence at concerts, games, performances, and ceremonies quietly reminds a child that they are deeply loved.
I see the stepmother, foster mother, godmother, mentor, or maternal figure whose faithful love reveals that motherhood is ultimately defined by a willingness to give one’s heart completely to another.
These moments will never appear on transcripts. They will never hang from gym rafters. They will never receive earthly applause. Heaven sees what the world overlooks. Yet, they shape souls. And in the end, that is what changes the world.

The Gospel reminds us that the holiest lives are often the ones poured out gently, faithfully, and almost invisibly for others. Perhaps this is why motherhood reflects the heart of God so beautifully.
This Mother’s Day, may we pause with deep gratitude for all women who accompany our students with compassion. In the Kingdom of God, the people who shape the world most deeply are rarely the loudest.
They are the ones who, like Mary, continue saying “yes” long after the world has stopped noticing.
Happy Mother’s Day to all who love with a mother’s heart.
